I have previously been able to create a new branch in my fork of a repository with the source set to a branch in the upstream repository that is not the default branch and have the tracking set so that the commit status is reported against the source branch and PRs created from commits to that branch would target the source branch. I appear now not to be able to do that - any branch I try and create is always set as tracking the default branch in the upstream repository and an attempt to create a PR will only target the default branch upstream. I've tried with both Firefox and Chrome with the same behaviour.
How do I correctly set the tracking reference so that PRs can be created against the source branch (whether in my repo or upstream) and not the upstream default branch???
Edit: clarify that my question is to do with the tracking reference and creating PRs against the source branch
