Short: When viewing a file in code view, you can view the repository tree on the left bar. There should be a method for opening files in the tree in a new tab.
Long: When reading code on GitHub, there are many times where I want to flip quickly between multiple related files. To do this, I will generally try to open them in separate tabs. One of the reasons I love the repository tree in code view is that I can quickly find these files without having to navigate away from the code. However, atm, there is no way to open these files in a new tab, so I either have to navigate to the files another way (e.g. Go to File or manually traverse the tree through the traditional interface) or open the file in the current tab and lose my place in the current file. Both of these methods are suboptimal and diminish the usefulness of the tree.
What my brain expects is to be able to right click on the file in the tree and get an option to open it in a new tab/window (like a standard link), however, I'd also be fine with any other implementation that accomplishes the same result (e.x. a separate button next to the filename).
