Git add error - error: 'main/' does not have a commit checked out

I am trying to push a rails 6 app to heroku. I am following these steps:

1. git init
2. git add .
3. git commit -m “My first commit”
4. heroku create
5. git push heroku master

when I run command: git add . I get this error:
git add .
error: ‘main/’ does not have a commit checked out
fatal: adding files failed

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If any sub folder have a .git directory then parent folder cannot commit......

Anyway, check all the sub folders of the parent directory, there may be .git folder hidden into it. If so then remove them first and that's gonna solve your problem.....

There may be directory called Main, If you can find directory called Main , there may be .git folder hidden into it.

If there is nothing else in Main directory, you may try deleting it and then re-run commands.

to add to this i found a nice article on medium by Zachary Schulz.

and he suggests to do this

#check for .git files using this command
ls -la
#if .git files present
rm -rf .git

If someone else is experiencing this issue and can't find a Main folder.
I somehow had to stage each file individually before it worked. So you can also try to do that.

Hi there,

Main is the default branch at GitHub as I noticed. I can change and check it in my Ubuntu as in the attached file. Hope this helps.

I faced same error, I found there was .git hidden folder inside my folder that was giving me error

Solution
Delete hidden .git folder -> git add .
