Hey everyone, it’s been a while since I last saw you and we’re well overdue for a check-in on everything that’s happened since GitHub Universe.
Universe launched a lot of exciting changes for Codespaces and opened up access to all GitHub users, so here’s a summary in case you missed it.
What launched at Universe 🚀
Codespaces for all!
Codespaces is now generally available for all GitHub Users to get started with, at zero cost! All GitHub users now get 60 hours of free Codespaces usage (90 hours for those on the Pro plan) each month, so you can start working on your project in seconds, from anywhere.
To get started, head to your repo and select the “Codespaces” tab from the green “code” button, or head to https://codespaces.new/ to create your first Codespace.
Powerful Codespaces for Powerful AI projects
For those of you working in Data Science, Machine Learning, or AI, this launch is for you!
Codespaces now offers JupyterLab support in public beta! For help getting set up with machine learning in Codespaces check out this getting started guide in the docs.
Additionally, GPU-powered Codespaces are now available in limited beta. Codespaces with dedicated GPU hardware allows developers to run complex ML models much more quickly, making collaboration on data science and ML workloads much easier. Say goodbye to complex local setup instructions on underpowered hardware and take your machine learning to the cloud!
Learn more in the docs, and to request access to the GPU machine type, or any additional machine type, complete the sign up form and the team will respond as soon as possible.
Use the tools you love
We all love our own IDEs. They’re our home, where we feel most comfortable, and we already know all the keyboard shortcuts to fly through our code. Well, now you can bring your Codespaces with you as we add support for connecting to Codespaces via JetBrains IDEs!
To connect to your Codespace from apps like IntelliJ or PyCharm, download JetBrains Gateway and install the Codespaces plugin from the JetBrains Marketplace.
Understanding your Codespaces billing 💰
Billing for Codespaces can be complex. There are two different resources to manage: storage and core-hours.
Storage is the amount of data your Codespaces takes up on disk, with free accounts given 15GB of included storage space per month. For a detailed breakdown in storage calculations check out this section of the billing docs.
Core-hours are a measurement of the amount of time your Codespace CPU is active. This amount is then multiplied by the amount of CPU cores your Codespace has, configurable on creation. For example, if you use a 2-core machine for your Codespace and it's active for an hour, you have used 2 core hours.
For a more detailed breakdown of billing for Codespaces see the the docs page about billing for Codespaces or check out our FAQs.

GitHub takes a break over the holidays 💤
The festive season is fast approaching and many teams here at GitHub will be taking time away to spend the holidays with family and friends. The Product and Engineering teams will be taking time off, and the Support and Community teams will be working with reduced capacity. This means that responses to support tickets, feature requests, bugs, and issues may take longer than usual.
Rest assured; the community team will still be here to keep an eye on the discussion boards.
Happy holidays if you celebrate, everyone, and I’ll see you again with another check-in in the new year!
